Traveling in Puglia: The Perfect 2-Week Road Trip!
Share
Puglia, the sun-drenched heel of Italy, is the destination for those who love charming towns, beautiful scenery and delicious cuisine.
With a rental car from Brindisi airport (you can get there in less than 2.5 hours from Eindhoven!) you can make the perfect road trip along historical cities, vineyards, ceramic towns and idyllic beaches. Here is your route for an unforgettable journey:
Day 1 - 4 Lecce and Otranto
Your adventure begins in Brindisi, where you will rent a car upon arrival (tip: Locauto). Drive to an atmospheric masseria or agriturismo near Lecce. These traditional farms offer an authentic and peaceful start to your journey.

Lecce:
The 'Florence of the South' is known for its baroque architecture. Spend a day strolling through the old town, visit the Basilica di Santa Croce and enjoy a coffee with a pasticciotto (local delicacy).
Otranto:
This picturesque harbour town has a pleasant boulevard, an impressive castle and the beautiful cathedral with a unique mosaic. The turquoise sea invites for a refreshing dip.
Tip: Fancy another trip? The city of Gallipoli is also easy to visit! But feel free to skip Gallipoli if you have less time. In our opinion, the town is less special compared to Lecce and Otranto.
Day 5 - 6 Grottaglie and Matera
After a few days, continue to charming Grottaglie, famous for its ceramic tradition (and of course the place where the Oliva tableware is made!). Stroll through the Ceramics District, where studios full of colorful artworks will inspire you.
Matera:

Continue your way to Matera. This place is just over the border in Basilicata, so officially no longer in Puglia. But this place is really not to be missed!
Stay here at least one night so you can admire the Sassi - the ancient cave dwellings - at night when they are magically illuminated. Wander through the winding streets, taste the local specialties and enjoy the view of the ravines.
Day 7 - 14 Day Trips
After a night in Matera, you travel to an accommodation near Ostuni or Fasano, for example. Apollo Puglia is, in our opinion, the perfect base for exploring the Valle d'Itria and the coast. And while you're there, say hello to Marcantonio, the hospitable owner.

Monopoly:
This charming town offers a picturesque harbour, pleasant squares and a relaxed atmosphere.

Locorotondo:
An absolute highlight as far as we are concerned! This white village is surrounded by vineyards (need we say more?) Visit the local vineyard on the edge of the village and enjoy a glass of fresh wine while looking out over the hilly landscape.
Alberobello:
World famous for its trulli, the traditional white houses with pointed roofs. It feels like you are walking through a fairy tale!
Ostuni:
The 'White City' is beautiful to see from a distance and wonderful to stroll through. Have an aperitif on one of the atmospheric squares.

Polignano a Mare
Although the cliffs and beaches here are beautiful, it can get very busy and touristy in high season. It is a must-see on your list of must-sees, but one evening is enough for us!
Beaches:
Visit one of the many lidos along the coast for a day of sun, sea and beach comfort. Enjoy fresh fish and local wines in the beach bars.

Practical tips for your Roadtrip:
Transport:
A small rental car is ideal for the narrow streets of Puglia.
To eat:
Try orecchiette pasta, burrata and focaccia. And don't forget the local wines like Primitivo and Negroamaro!
Best time to travel:
May, June and September are perfect to avoid the summer crowds but still enjoy warm weather.
This itinerary will allow you to experience the best of Puglia in two weeks. From the historic splendor of Matera to the serene vineyards of Locorotondo, this road trip offers a perfect balance of culture, nature and relaxation!
